Short answer: a Shopify expert typically charges about $50 to $150 an hour in the US, with offshore help from about $15 an hour and senior US or UK engineers at $150 to $250 or more. Small fixes run a few hundred dollars, a theme customization $1,000 to $5,000, and a custom store build $5,000 to $20,000 or more. Ongoing support and conversion retainers are quoted by the month, from about $1,000 to over $5,000. Your Shopify plan is on top of all of it.
Figures come from three pages that agencies and developer shops publish about their own market: Clean Commit’s Shopify expert cost guide (updated October 30, 2026), Shopplaza’s 2026 cost guide (dated September 2025) and Meetanshi’s hiring guide (dated September 2024), read October 31, 2026. Every source sells the service it prices, and they disagree with each other in places, so treat the numbers as asking prices, not a survey.
Shopify expert rates at a glance
The sources agree on the shape of the market and disagree on the details. Here is each number with where it came from.
| Source | Published rate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Commit | $50 to $250+ an hour | Offshore developers from about $15 an hour, senior US or UK engineers $150 to $250+ |
| Shopplaza, by region | North America $50 to $100+, Western Europe $40 to $90, Eastern Europe $20 to $50, Asia $15 to $40 | Freelance hourly rates by where the person is based |
| Shopplaza and Meetanshi, Upwork tiers | $15 beginner, $33 intermediate, $95 expert | Median hourly rates by experience level on one freelance marketplace |
| Meetanshi, by country | US $50, Canada $50, UK $40, India $20 | Freelance averages |
| Shopplaza, by hiring model | Agency $25 to $45, freelancer $10 to $25 | Conflicts with every other source, which put agencies above freelancers |
Read the table as three markets. Offshore and junior help sits at $15 to $40 an hour. Experienced US freelancers sit at $50 to $150. Senior engineers and agencies sit at $150 and up. The one source that puts agencies below freelancers is an outlier, and you should expect an agency to cost more per hour because it bills for project management as well.
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify expert for a project?
Hours times rate is the honest formula, and the hours depend on how much of the store already exists. These are the project ranges the sources publish.
| Job | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Minor edits | $200 to $800 | Shopplaza |
| Fix errors | $200 to $1,000 | Shopplaza |
| Theme customization | $1,000 to $5,000 | Shopplaza |
| Performance optimization | $500 to $5,000 | Shopplaza |
| Store migration | $500 to $5,000 | Shopplaza |
| Custom theme development | $500 to $2,000 (freelance) or $15,000 to $30,000 for a mid-size brand | Meetanshi, Clean Commit |
| Third-party integration | $1,500 to $2,500 | Meetanshi |
| Custom store build | $5,000 to $20,000+ | Shopplaza |
| Ongoing support | $1,000 to $10,000+ a month | Clean Commit |
| Conversion rate optimization retainer | $5,950 a month at one agency | Clean Commit’s own price |
The custom theme row shows how wide the range is. A freelancer adapting an existing theme and an agency designing a mid-size brand from scratch are not selling the same thing, and a quote at either end is not necessarily wrong. Ask what is included before you compare prices.
What does a Shopify conversion fix actually cost?
This is the job most store owners are really shopping for: traffic arrives, nobody buys. Two of the three sources publish no price for conversion work at all, and the one that does is an agency quoting its own monthly retainer at $5,950. That tells you the work is usually sold as a retainer, not a one-off fix, and it is priced for stores that can afford a five-figure quarterly commitment.
A smaller store has a cheaper first step. Many of the highest-impact problems on a Shopify store are visible from the live page: a product page whose add to cart button sits below three screens of images, a headline that names the product instead of the result, a mobile page that takes five seconds to load, or a cart with a dozen links back out to the store. None of those needs a developer to find. They need someone to look at the page and count.
Hourly or fixed project price
Hourly pricing suits unclear or ongoing work, such as chasing a bug or small weekly tweaks. Fixed pricing suits a defined job with a written scope, such as a migration or a theme customization. The risk with hourly is a bill that grows. The risk with fixed is a vague scope that ends in a change order. Whichever you pick, get the deliverable in writing before you pay.
What to put in the brief
A good brief is the cheapest way to lower a quote, because the expert spends less time guessing. Include the store URL, the plan you are on, the two or three pages that matter most (usually the homepage, one best-selling product page and the cart), what you sell and to whom, where your traffic comes from, and the number you want to move. “Lift add to cart rate on mobile product pages” is a brief. “Make the store better” is an invitation to bill hours.
Should I hire a Shopify expert or fix the page myself first?
If you have no store, or the one you have is on the wrong structure, hire. If you have a store that gets traffic and does not sell, find out why before you pay anyone to rebuild it. The usual causes are structural and cheap to fix inside the theme editor: the first buy button deep on a phone, a hero image that loads slowly, product titles that bury the benefit, and too many competing links on the product and cart pages.
Converto checks those from the live URL in about a minute. It measures where the first call to action sits, counts the exits, times the page and writes replacement headline and button copy. The checks and where to change each one are on Shopify landing page optimization, and the Shopify store audit covers product and cart pages. Plans start from $29 a month billed yearly, which is less than an hour of most US experts’ time, and you can re-check the page after every change.
The two routes work together. Audit first, fix what you can in an afternoon, and hand the expert a shorter brief for what is left. If you are weighing a larger commitment, Shopify CRO agency vs in-house sets out when an agency earns its fee. Once the store converts, you can send it more traffic with UGC style video ads made from a product page.
How to choose among the best Shopify experts
Ratings and badges tell you someone delivered on time. They do not tell you the stores sold more. Before you hire, ask for three live stores the expert worked on, open each on your phone, and check the basics yourself: does the product page headline say what you get, is there an add to cart button in the first screen, how many links lead off the page, and how long does it take to load. You can also paste those pages into an audit and compare the scores. An expert who builds pages that pass those checks will usually build yours the same way.
Ask too whether they have worked on your kind of store. A single-product brand, a catalog of 5,000 SKUs and a subscription box need different pages, and a developer who has only built one will default to it.
Paste your page and see what is leaking
Drop in any live URL and Converto audits the copy, layout, CTAs, speed, and AI-readability of the page you already have, then hands you ready-to-ship variants to lift signups and sales. Suggestions are data-informed, not guarantees.
