Session Replay Tools: Best Session Replay Software and Heatmap Tools Compared
Ten session replay and heatmap tools compared on price, free tier, and what each one meters, with July 2026 pricing checked at source. Then the part replay cannot do: telling you what to change.
Why this tends to convert:
Data-informed, not guarantees
Where each one fits
Microsoft Clarity is the best session replay tool for most teams because it records unlimited sessions for free, with heatmaps included and no paid tier to upgrade into. Pay for a replay tool only when you hit a specific wall that free does not clear: form field analytics (Mouseflow, from $25/mo), engineering-grade session search (FullStory, quote-based), autocapture (Heap), or usage-based billing next to feature flags (PostHog, from $0.0050 per recording).
Two things changed in this category in 2026 that older comparison posts miss. Hotjar no longer has its own pricing page, since hotjar.com now redirects to contentsquare.com and new buyers are routed into Contentsquare packaging that prices surveys separately from recordings. And Smartlook is winding down on a published schedule, with end of sale on 31 May 2026 and full decommission on 30 September 2027.
All of these tools answer the same question: what did visitors do on the page. None of them answers the question that follows, which is what to change. That is the seam Converto sits in. Paste a live URL and it audits the copy, layout, CTAs, speed, and AI-readability of the page you already have, then hands back ready-to-ship variants, self-serve from $19/mo, no snippet and no traffic threshold. Suggestions are data-informed, not guarantees.

Session replay tools compared in 2026
Every tool below records real sessions and draws heatmaps. What separates them is what they meter, whether the price is public, and how much of the platform you have to buy to get replay. Prices were checked against each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026.

Two things changed in this category in 2026
Hotjar no longer has its own pricing page. As of July 2026, hotjar.com and hotjar.com/pricing both redirect to contentsquare.com. Hotjar still exists as a product and existing legacy plans are still being honored, but new buyers are routed into Contentsquare packaging, where the old single bill has been split into separately priced product lines. Heatmaps and recordings sit in one line, surveys sit in another. If you last priced Hotjar as one bundled subscription, re-price it before you budget, because the surveys you assumed were included may now be a second purchase. Contentsquare does not publish full list pricing, so treat any specific Hotjar number you read (including the widely cited $49/mo entry point) as reported by third parties rather than confirmed by the vendor.
Smartlook is being retired on a published schedule. End of sale is 31 May 2026, end of contract renewals is 31 August 2026, last day of support is 31 August 2027, and full decommission lands on 30 September 2027, at which point remaining customer data is deleted. There is no automatic migration to another product and historical session data does not transfer. If Smartlook is still in your stack, the work to plan is the export, not just the replacement. Our Smartlook alternative page covers that timeline in more detail.
How session replay pricing actually works
The sticker price matters less than the meter behind it, and vendors deliberately meter different things. Get the unit wrong and a plan that looked cheap runs out in three weeks.
- Sessions (Hotjar, Mouseflow, Lucky Orange, FullStory, Heap). One visit is one session regardless of how many pages it touches. Predictable if your traffic is steady, painful during a spike.
- Pageviews (Crazy Egg). Every page load counts, so a visitor who browses ten pages burns ten units. On a content-heavy or ecommerce site this is far more expensive than it first appears.
- Recordings (PostHog). You pay per recording captured after the free allowance, which suits teams with variable traffic because there is no cliff, just a slowly rising bill.
- Nothing (Microsoft Clarity). Genuinely free with no session cap, funded because Microsoft gains aggregate web behavior data. Heatmaps are capped around 100,000 page views, and there is no A/B testing.
Estimate your real monthly sessions before you shortlist. A site doing 40,000 sessions a month sits comfortably inside Clarity, needs roughly the middle tier at Mouseflow or Lucky Orange, and is already into quote territory at FullStory.
Do you need to pay for session replay at all?
Often no. Microsoft Clarity records unlimited sessions for free and does the core job well, which is why it has taken so much of the low end of this market. The honest reasons to pay are narrow but real: Mouseflow if form field analytics and friction scoring are the point, FullStory if you need to search across sessions and hand engineers a reproducible bug, Heap if you want autocapture so you are not defining events in advance, PostHog if you want replay sitting next to feature flags and analytics on one bill. Paying for a tool that only does what Clarity does free is the most common overspend in this category. Our full Microsoft Clarity comparison goes through where free stops being enough, and our head-to-head on Microsoft Clarity versus Hotjar covers the two picks most teams end up choosing between.
What session replay will not tell you
This is the limitation that catches teams out, and it is worth being blunt about it. Session replay is an observation tool. It shows you that eleven people in a row scrolled past your pricing table and left. It does not tell you why, and it does not tell you what to write instead. You still have to watch the recordings, form a theory, and then write the fix yourself.
That gap costs time in two ways. First, replay needs traffic before it says anything: on a page getting 200 visits a month you will wait weeks for a pattern to appear. Second, watching sessions is slow work that does not scale, which is why so many teams install a replay tool, watch recordings for a fortnight, and quietly stop opening it.
Converto works from the other end. Paste a live URL and it audits the copy, layout, CTAs, page speed, and AI-readability of the page you already have, scores each dimension, and hands back ready-to-ship variants for the headline, CTA, and body copy. No snippet, no traffic threshold, no waiting for a sample to build. Self-serve from $19/mo. Suggestions are data-informed, not guarantees, and no tool can promise a specific lift from reading a page.
The two approaches complement each other rather than compete. Run a landing page audit to get a prioritized list of what to change today, ship the top fixes, then use a replay tool to watch how real visitors behave on the new version. If you are still deciding which category of tool you actually need, our guide to product analytics versus session replay maps the difference, session replay versus heatmaps covers the split inside this category, and the wider CRO tool landscape covers experimentation and builders too.
How to choose in five minutes
Start with Microsoft Clarity unless you have a specific reason not to. It is free, uncapped on sessions, and will tell you within a week whether replay is a habit your team will actually keep. If you hit a real wall, the wall tells you which paid tool to buy: forms point to Mouseflow, engineering debugging points to FullStory, event definition fatigue points to Heap, and wanting replay bundled with flags and analytics points to PostHog. If you want surveys alongside recordings, that is the Hotjar route, with the Contentsquare repackaging above factored into your budget.
And if what you actually want is not more observation but a decision about what to change on the page, that is a different tool entirely. Cheap options like Crazy Egg and Lucky Orange will give you another heatmap. They will not write your headline.

Questions
session replay tools alternative questions
What is the best session replay tool?
There is no single best one, because the useful split is free versus specialized. Microsoft Clarity is the best starting point for almost everyone since it records unlimited sessions at no cost. Pay only when you hit a specific wall: Mouseflow for form analytics, FullStory for engineering-grade debugging, Heap for autocapture, PostHog for usage-based billing alongside feature flags.
Is there a free session replay tool?
Yes. Microsoft Clarity is genuinely free with no session cap and no paid tier, and it includes heatmaps and recordings. FullStory offers 30,000 free sessions a month, PostHog includes 5,000 free web recordings a month, and Mouseflow has a free plan capped at 500 sessions. Clarity is the only one with no volume ceiling at all.
How much does session replay software cost?
Entry paid pricing in July 2026 runs from $25/mo (Mouseflow, 5,000 sessions) and $29/mo (Crazy Egg, 5,000 pageviews) to $32/mo (Lucky Orange, 3,500 sessions). PostHog charges from $0.0050 per recording after a free allowance. FullStory, Heap, and Contentsquare are quote-based annual contracts and do not publish list prices.
Is Hotjar still a separate product?
Hotjar still exists and legacy plans are still honored, but as of July 2026 both hotjar.com and hotjar.com/pricing redirect to contentsquare.com. New buyers are routed into Contentsquare packaging, where heatmaps and recordings are priced separately from surveys. Contentsquare does not publish full list pricing, so any specific Hotjar figure should be treated as third-party reported.
What is the difference between session replay and heatmaps?
A heatmap aggregates many visits into one picture showing where people clicked, moved, and how far they scrolled. Session replay reconstructs one individual visit as a watchable recording. Heatmaps tell you what is typical across your traffic, replay tells you what happened to one person. Most tools in this category include both.
Does session replay slow down your website?
Every replay tool adds a JavaScript snippet, so there is some cost, though modern tools load asynchronously and typically add tens of milliseconds rather than seconds. The larger risk is compounding: sites often run replay, analytics, tag managers, and chat at once. Audit total third-party script weight rather than any single tool, since page speed itself affects conversion.
